Michael Thomson, a 1950 ‘baby boomer’ was born in Newtown. Six years of art history lessons at Homebush Boy’s High nurtured his passion for architecture. He undertook a Diploma of Art (Education) at the National Art School and Alexander Mackie Teachers College, graduating in 1971. He then taught at various high schools in New South Wales until his retirement in 2010. His early exposure to Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture later led to an equally enduring enthusiasm for the work of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. He is currently President of the Walter Burley Griffin Society. He has been a resident of Concord for forty-seven years. In 2018 and 2019 he made two trips to the US, photographing buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin, as well as a many other significant architects’ work.
