Damian Gleeson will be our first speaker for 2026. Damian Gleeson PhD is a genealogist and historian who has published widely. His works include An Enduring Flame: St Patrick’s Mortlake, 1885-2020: An Irish-Australian Working-Class Community (Mortlake, NSW, 2021), which was awarded the City of Canada Bay Heritage Award in 2021, and The Rock of St George: celebrating the 125th anniversary of the first St Joseph’s Church/School, Rockdale (Rockdale City, NSW, 2017), winner of the Ron Rathbone Local History Prize, Bayside Council, 2017.
Gleeson’s book: Irish Bigamy:New insights into Colonial New South Wales is the first to examine colonial marriage and bigamy amongst convicts in penal New South Wales. Although illegal, bigamy was condoned by civil and most church authorities between 1788 and 1825. Bigamous marriages had far reaching implications for Catholic and Protestant families who lived in destitute circumstances in Ireland and England Irish Bigamy includes more than 100 case studies drawn from original unpublished letters held in the State Library of New South Wales from/to convicts and their families in Ireland.
