In the 2021 New Year Honour List, our secretary received the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division. She was recognised for her more than 50 years’ service to heritage through the City of Canada Bay Heritage Society and their Museum. It could have not gone to a more deserving member.
Lois has commented that she is delighted to have received this honour but feels that it is also in recognition of the many members and volunteers, past and present, who have assisted in the work of the society and museum over the years. She is looking to many more years to come and would like to encourage more members and volunteers to come forward to keep the society going.
Please convey the congratulations of the members of Hunters Hill Historical Society to Lois Michel for being honoured with an OAM. Her contribution to heritage over many years has been duly recognised. It is pleasing to note that such contributions are respected and valued by the community at large.
Chirs Schofield
President, Hunters Hill Historical Society
Congratulations to Lois Michel on her receiving an OAM. Lois has worked for so many years supporting Heritage in Concord and Canada Bay. In particular she has worked hard for Yaralla and the Walker Convalescent Hospital.

Congratulations, Lois and the Canada Bay team! Such a wonderful acknowledgement of your constant hard work presenting the history of your area.
On behalf of London’s Barnes and Mortlake History Society, which claims kinship with City of Canada Bay Heritage Society through our mutual Mortlake association, I pass to Lois Michel our warmest congratulations on the well-deserved recognition of her contribution to the world of local history. I have been in touch with Lois for several years, and always admire the work that she and her colleagues do in recording the history of “the other Mortlake” (as an expatriate Victorian, I must record that I knew Mortlake in the Western District many years before finally visiting Sydney’s Mortlake). As editor of the BMHS Newsletter, I was pleased to record some years ago the award of similar honours to a number of local historians in Australia, suggesting the Commonwealth leads the way in this regard, as I have never seen any comparable award in the UK. Well done Australia, CCBHS – and Lois. – Murray Hedgcock, Mortlake, UK
Congratulations, Lois. An honour most deserved by you and long overdue.
