Permission Refused

The following article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday, 20 February, 1922.

The introduction of boxing into the district is objected to by the Central Concord Progress Association which has written to the local council protesting against the granting of an application for permission to hold a contest in a picture theatre.

The reasons advanced in support of the protest were that, in other suburbs where such displays had been permitted, betting and drinking took place during the performance in spite of regulations. This was followed by discreditable scenes outside. Also undesirable types of persons were attracted from near and even distant suburbs where previously these exhibitions had been allowed. They were not now permitted because the general influence of them on audiences, especially the younger portion, was injurious.

By a large majority, the council decided not to grant the application.
